Warning: the trail sign at the junction near Mount Rogers sent me a mile the wrong direction
Last October I was three days into a loop in southwest Virginia and cruising on autopilot when I hit a junction with two blazes and one little wooden arrow pointing left. I took it without checking my map, and about a mile later the trail started climbing straight up a rocky mess that didn't match my notes at all. When I finally pulled out the paper map at a break, I saw the arrow was for a side trail to a shelter, not my route, and I'd just added two miles and 700 feet of pointless climbing to my day. Now I read the whole sign before I move, every single time. What's the dumbest detour you've eaten because you trusted one arrow over your own map?
