The BWCA ranger told me my 45 lb pack was 20 lbs too heavy and he was dead on
Spent 6 days on the Snowbank Lake loop near Ely, Minnesota and got smoked by a guy in his 60s carrying maybe 25 lbs, so has anyone else ditched the camp chair and the 3 person tent for solo trips or am I just stubborn?
Ha, that ranger was just doing you a favor by being blunt about it. I finally left my camp chair at home last year and now I sit on a foam pad like some kind of swamp creature, but my knees thank me on every portage. Six days with 45 lbs is no joke, that older guy with 25 lbs was probably floating past you with a pillow and a book. The 3 person tent for one person is a tough one to give up though, all that room feels like a palace until you have to carry it. There is a fine line between being prepared and just hauling your whole house into the woods.
