Chose the High Sierra Trail over the Rae Lakes loop and got snowed on at Precipice Lake

Picked the High Sierra Trail last month instead of Rae Lakes because a ranger at Lodgepole said Rae Lakes was a zoo with 40 permits a day. Hit Precipice Lake on day 3 in June and postholed through 4 miles of slush in trail runners, miserable but the lake looked unreal frozen over. Anyone else gamble on trail choice based on one ranger's opinion and get burned?
