TIL my rear sway bar end link snapped on a grocery run and I drove 3 days without noticing
So last Tuesday I was pulling out of the Kroger lot in Dayton and heard this little clunk over the speed bump, but I had a trunk full of bags so I figured it was just stuff sliding around. Three days later I finally crawl under the car to check a rattle and the passenger side end link is just gone, the ball stud sheared clean off the bar. I'd done the links myself about 8 months back with a set of cheap ones off Amazon and clearly that was a mistake, the boot was torn and the grease was long gone. Thing is, the car barely felt different on my normal commute, which honestly scares me more than if it had felt awful. I swapped in a beefier set with greasable fittings Saturday morning and the difference in turn-in was night and day, made me wonder how long that link was half dead before it let go. Now I'm paranoid and checking torque on everything, has anyone else had cheap end links fail this fast, and what did you go with the second time around?
A buddy of mine put the cheapest links he could find on his WRX and one snapped in under a year, same clean shear at the ball stud. He drove it a week without noticing because the car just felt a little vague on the highway, which he chalked up to tires. He went with Moog greasables the second time and stopped buying suspension parts by lowest price.
