Finally stopped chasing loud exhausts after riding in a properly tuned setup

Last month my buddy in Denver took me for a spin in his turbo build with a custom 3 inch setup and quiet muffler, and the power delivery felt way smoother than my straight piped car. I always thought loud meant fast, but his car pulled harder through 3rd gear at half the noise. 3 years ago I spent $400 on a catback that drones on the highway and honestly sounds like a lawnmower on cold starts. It hit me that I was tuning for attention, not for the actual driving feel. Has anyone else switched priorities from sound to drivability and noticed a bigger difference in how the car responds?
