Tried stacking 50 short shots of the moon instead of one long one and the result messed me up
Last week I pointed my little 70mm refractor at the moon from my driveway in Spokane and shot 50 quick frames at 1/250 instead of my usual single long exposure. I figured stacking would just clean up the noise a bit, but when I ran them through the free software the crater shadows came out so sharp I actually flinched. Turns out the atmosphere wobbles your shot around every single frame, so one long exposure smears all that wobble into one blurry mess. I sat there at 1am comparing the two pics and the stacked one showed rilles I couldn't even see before. Now I'm wondering how many of my old shots were ruined by bad seeing and I just blamed my gear. Anyone else stack way more frames than they think they need, or am I overdoing it at 50?
