The Roman fort ditch at Vindolanda looked way different after 2 hours of troweling
Honestly I was digging at Vindolanda last summer and the change still sticks with me. What started as a dark stripe in the trench wall turned into a clean V shaped ditch after about 2 hours of troweling, maybe 40cm down. The fill was soft with bits of leather and a chunk of samian ware, so the profile showed up fast once I scraped the spoil back. Ngl I almost called the supervisor over because I thought I'd sliced through a floor layer by mistake. Has anyone else hit that moment where a section goes from muck to textbook in one dig day?
