Picked the trowel over the shovel at a dig near Dayton and it paid off with 14 shards
I volunteered at a dig site outside Dayton two weekends back and the crew lead told me I could either take the shovel and clear the whole trench fast or take the trowel and go slow on one 1x1 meter square. I went with the trowel even though everyone else grabbed shovels and I felt kind of silly scraping away an inch at a time. About 3 hours in I hit a dark stain in the soil that turned out to be a small trash pit, and I pulled 14 pottery shards and a piece of a bone handle out of it. The shovel crew cleared their squares quick but mostly just found dirt and a couple of nails. The crew lead said the pit was probably early 1800s based on the glaze on the shards, which is the oldest stuff found at that site so far. Now I want to know if anyone else has had luck going slow when everyone around them was going fast, or did I just get lucky with where I picked my square?
