Got kicked off a dig site in Santa Fe for bagging a sherd wrong, now I label everything twice
So I was volunteering at a pueblo site outside Santa Fe back in April, my first real excavation after two years of just reading about it. Found this painted sherd about the size of a quarter, got excited, and bagged it with the wrong context number because I mixed up the level tags. The site lead pulled me aside in front of like 8 people and said my mistake could mess up the whole room's dating. I drove 90 minutes home that day feeling like total garbage. Now I write the number on the bag, the tag, and my own hand before anything goes in. Also started carrying a little notebook to log every find right when it comes out of the dirt instead of trusting my memory. Any of you ever get chewed out on a dig and did it actually make you better or just paranoid?
