Deadwooding a live oak in July: worth the risk or just asking for sunscald?
Had a client in Phoenix last month push hard to deadwood their big live oak right in the middle of a 108 degree week, and I told them we should wait. My take is that pulling deadwood in peak heat exposes way more live tissue to sunscald and borers than people admit, but a couple guys on my crew say deadwood comes out easier and safer when the wood is dry. I've seen two oaks in the last 3 seasons come back with bark damage after a summer prune, but maybe that's just my area. Where do you all land on this, do you prune deadwood in the heat or wait for fall?
