That $30 dollar gasket kit my cousin swore by left my washer flooding my basement

My cousin said the cheap kit from the flea market in Akron would work fine, but after 2 loads the rubber split right down the seam, has anyone else had luck with those bargain rubber seals or am I just cursed with bad luck?
