Dropped $180 on a used refrigerant scale and it saved me on a job in Tucson last month
I usually just charge by gauges and call it close enough, which has bit me more than once. Picked up a used scale off a retiring tech for $180 and figured it would sit in the truck. Last month I had a unit in Tucson that kept coming back low on charge, and the scale showed I was overcharging it by almost a pound every visit. Turned out the real issue was a tiny leak I kept missing because the pressures looked fine. Has anyone else had a tool pay for itself on a single comeback like that?
That "overcharging it by almost a pound every visit" part is exactly why the scale matters and nobody wants to hear it. I had a rooftop unit doing the same thing, kept topping it off, pressures looked mint every time, and I was basically feeding a leak I couldn't find. Get yourself a cheap electronic leak detector too, the $40 ones on Amazon are fine for finding a hiss. And when you do find it, weigh the charge back in by the data plate instead of guessing, because gauges lie when it's 110 out. Temp glide alone will have you chasing your tail on a 410 system. $180 is a steal, that guy did you a solid.
