A customer told me I should just swap parts until it works, and I can't shake it
Was out on a call in Aurora last Thursday, fridge not cooling, nothing crazy. The guy watches me pull my meter out and go through the board, and he goes "why don't you just start replacing stuff until it runs? That's what the last guy did." I laughed it off at the time but it's been bugging me for days. That's literally how you turn a $180 repair into a $600 one and half the time it still don't work. I spent 12 years learning to actually diagnose instead of guessing. But then I think about how many guys in my own shop do exactly that because it's faster and the customer pays either way. So now I'm wondering if I'm the sucker for taking the slow road. How do you all handle it when a customer basically asks you to shotgun the repair? Do you stick to your diagnosis or just give them what they want?
