What if Ferris Bueller's day off actually ended with him getting caught?

Rewatched it last night and it hit me that Cameron's dad's car being destroyed is way too convenient, what if the principal finally busted him at the steakhouse and the whole movie flipped to a detention ending? Anyone else think that would've made a better sequel setup than the post-credits wink?

...but honestly I think getting caught would have ruined the whole point of the movie. The ending works because Ferris gets away with it, and that's what makes it a fantasy. If he gets busted at the steakhouse, then the entire movie becomes a lesson about consequences, and nobody watches Ferris Bueller for that. Plus, the post-credits wink is perfect because it tells you this is a guy who will always slip through the cracks, and that's the joke. A detention ending would just make it every other teen movie from the 80s, and we already had plenty of those.
