Broken escalator at Deerbrook Mall nearly ended my trip, here's my gear trick

Last month at the old Deerbrook Mall in Humble, the escalator just stopped halfway up, I had to haul my camera bag and tripod up 40 steps by hand. Now I always pack a small ratchet strap in my bag, lets me lash the tripod to the railing if I need both hands free. Anyone else get stuck carrying heavy gear in these places, what do you do?
